In Ottawa we spent 2 wonderful days at Bob Baser's, an former Canadian hockeymate of Erik. He left Maastricht just a couple of month after the start of our world bike tour in 2006. As his wife was away on business, a pity of course but for us an excuse to treat ourselves with delicious Indian and Thai food, and ... "pilsjes"!
Downtown it is obvious that Canada was once part of England: many governmental buildings show that typical Victoriaan style, Parliament is a good example.
Between Montreal and Quebec we followed the "Chemin du Roy" (King's Road), a sometimes rather poor (bad pavement) track along the westbank of the St. Lawrence River. Because of the private ownership of almost all the (free) lots on the riverside we just now and then had a glance on the river.
This bike route seems to be rather popular with bikers, there were surprisingly many on the road. We rode two days together with an American couple on a tandem: quite interesting to hear their story of leaving Letvia and the Ukraine at the beginning of the nineties, after the breakdown of the Sowjet Union. Both with skills to start a new life, living in Baltimore now.
Sofar our trip was rather comfortable to ride, almost flat except from parts of Pennsylvania. Weatherconditions not too bad, wind from the SW/W so favourable but maybe too much (drizzle)rain. Since temperatures are on seasonal level rain is not a big issue.
Instead of doing a bike tour into the old city of Quebec - we did a small one the day we arrived in Quebec - Angela will do a "tour" on her own and Erik is handling this item plus looking forward to see the semi-final in European Soccer Championship between Spain and Russia this afternoon. Unfortunately it's raining this morning and the forecast isn't that good for the rest of the day.
