CORSICA

NW-kust

English summary

Corsica
Arriving by ferry at Bonifacio in the south of Corsica is really awesome: amidst a rocky coast you will enter the harbour which is overlooked by the mighty, walled old city on top of the surrounding rockformation!
Our stages to Bastia -470 km - following the west coast were great: a windy, rather quiet coastal road, great (sea)views, not too hot weather thanks to the sea breeze but still up to 30C!
We were surprised by the beaty of "The Calanche", a mighty rockformation between Porticcio and Porto.
Compared to Sardinia where we enjoyed some pleasant, rather new, modern and priceworthy accommodation, most of the hotels we stayed on Corsica were öut of time, needed a push up as soon as possible and yet rather pricy! Not really value for money, but maybe we just had bad luck overthere.

Riviera
In St.Maxime on the French Riviera we stayed a couple of very relaxing days with friends we already know since we both studied at the The Hague Hotelschool in the sixties. Some great Mediteranean swimming, boating and lunching at one of St.Tropez' beaches. We felt being on vacation!
Following the coast into Italy we were a bit disappointed about the glory and grandeur of Cannes, Nice and Monto Carlo as we remembered that from the sixties and seventies.

Northen Italy
Following the coast from San Remo via Genua - an interesting downtown - we finally reached the lowlands of the river Po. For Angela a big relief: no climbing!
Via Lake Garda, still frequented by the Dutch, and Trento en Bolzano we prepared for our final clims to and through the Dolomiti and Alps.

Austria
"Doing" the "Brenner Pass (1375 m) wasn't that difficult, after a 6 km. long climb of about 6 to 7% we reached the top rather relaxed and finished at Steinach, some 10 km. further, just before a nasty thunderstorm! The old "Romerway" along the slopes of the eastern mountains towards Insbruck meant a lot of ups and downs but with fine views into the valley of the Inn. Via the "Zillertal" - the valley of the Ziller River - we climbed from 600 m to 1600 m, to cross the Gerlos Pass into the Pinzgau Valley with its famous "Krimml Falls". Unfortunately it rained during our clim to the Gerlos Pass, so we decided to stay at Gerlos, some 8 km. below the top. The next day down to 750 m to Mittersill before reaching Jochberg after crossing the "Thurn Pass" (1275 m). There we stayed another two days to be with the B&B family we know since we started our winter holidays in the eighties: being 92 and 82 they were still doing very well!
At Traunstein, 30 km. west of Salzburg, we both got sick because of a kind of foodpoisoning (Angela) and/or too much beer (Erik). The extra two days of rest gave us the satisfaction of an efficient use of our hotelroom and the relief of not having to bike in the rain!
After a cutoff through Germany we continued along the Salzach and Inn River to Burghausen (Germany). From our hotel on the east side (Austria) of the Inn we had an unique view on the largest "Burg" - medieval, walled city - of Europe.

Being in Erfurt now, after visiting Weimar - city of Goethe and Schiller - , straight westward to ... Maastricht (NL).
