Yes, since May 27 we are back in business, for another 5 months.
We flew from Amsterdam with United Airlines - the only airline that didn't charge us extra for our bikes - to Washington International Dulles Airport. Spent the next day biking around the National Mall, Capitool and absorbing that typical atmosphere of the USA "grandeur".
Georgetown, the beginning of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Bike Trail, that runs in between that canal and the Potomac River all the way up into Ohio, offered us an unexpected view into the old way of transport along the canal. Just for tourists an old fashioned "barge" - in those past times towed by mules and so for the occasion - left through one of the locks. Opening and closing the locks was done by locals dressed in that old Pennsylvanian style, quite interesting!
Since we left our camera-battery, recharger and adapter in our Frederick hotel - found out that in Harrisburg - we weren't able to take pictures of egg laying turtles in the gravel on the side of our Pine Creek Rail Trail, that was a pity as the weather then was too: rainy. But a lot of wildlife: chip munks, squirrels, different types of turtle, rabbits, deer and even a golden eagle!
At the Williams' at Troy NY we spent some wonderful days, spoiled again by the family. There we got back our battery, etc. after our phonecall from Harrisburg to the hotel. And hot it was: up to 95, so some severe thunderstorms hit us overthere. The midwest and parts of eastern USA are still suffering from very bad weather; we were lucky enough to escape from a nasty thunderstorm on our ride along Lake Cayuga, one of the Finger Lakes in NY. We missed Cornell University in Ithaca: too hot that morning and we had to to deal with the poor weather conditions.
Another two days before we enter into Canada, Ottawa, where we hope to meet an old hockeymate of Erik, a Canadian who returned from Maastricht NL two years ago.
